AsstrA-Associated Traffic AG is constantly exploring new and sometimes unconventional ways to serve customers and do business better. One example is the corporate groups’ newly formed Global Container Provision Department.
In this interview, Gulcin Kocak, AsstrA Business Accelerator Project Manager, provides some insights around this new division.
What is the purpose of the Global Container Provision Department?
The aim of this division is to meet customers’ requirements in cases where shipping lines cannot do so, for example when they do not have the right equipment available. We would like to provide solutions simultaneously for both our sales and operational teams as well as our customers.
There are times when shipping lines can not provide containers at some specific locations. In such a scenario, we can step in to find containers from another source that will be at the right place at the right time so that customers can ship their cargo without delays or extra waiting time.
Apart from helping cutomers this way, the other purpose of trading containers is to generate an extra revenue stream for the company. We buy containers from locations where they cost less and sell them where they cost more.
Why would customers be interested in this service vs. talking with shipping lines directly?
If customers want to save on demurrage and detention charges, they can come to us for longer free storage fees than if they were using shipper-owned containers. We have more flexibility to offer favorable conditions because we own the equipment.
Our customers may also be able to save on trucking costs because we can provide containers closer to the loading place.
Finally, customers may need special containers for specific trade lanes that shipping lanes can provide only standard containers for.
What are advantages for customers of working with AsstrA?
The main advantages are having direct, clear information and getting the right solutions quickly. They have containers ready when they need them and don’t have to wait. Ultimately that leads to more inventory sold.
