Food accounts for the majority of Ukrainian exports. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Economic Development’s press service, Ukraine was the world’s second largest grain exporter for the 2019-2020 crop accounting period. In terms of specific crops, Ukraine was the world’s second largest barley exporter, the fourth largest corn exporter, and fifth largest wheat exporter.
According to the Ukrainian Association of Importers of Fish and Fish Products, fish exports increased 13.2% in 2020 compared to 2019. Also in 2020, Ukraine exported a record-setting 70 tons of honey.

“Ukraine has an agriculture-based economy and the profile of its top exports reflects this – food products are the foundation for the country’s foreign trade. After the top two export product categories of grains and sunflower, oil and ferrous metallurgy products are also in high demand. Ukrainian building and interior design materials are also popular. We are also seeing strong demand for pharmaceuticals,” says Nataliya Demchenko, Ukraine Regional Country Manager and Kiev Branch Manager at AsstrA-Associated Traffic AG.
In 2021, the AsstrA corporate group’s Ukrainian representative office underwent an external audit to assess the quality and safety of its technical and business processes. AsstrA’s pharmaceutical transportation capabilities were highly rated by an independent third party.
Popular imports into Ukraine include fuel, oil and petroleum products, machinery, mechanical equipment and devices, cars, and EU-origin seeds.
Ukraine has the largest territory of any country in Europe. In the region it is second only in size to Türkiye, which is mostly located in Asia. Southern Ukraine is washed by the Black and Azov Seas and remains a strategic transit point in trade between Europe and Asia. Due to the country’s location as well as its political and economic situation, 80% of Ukrainian cargo transportation is carried out by road. There are 172.4 thousand km of public roads in the country.
“For domestic last-mile transportation, AsstrA's clients typically choose vehicles with carrying capacities of 5 or 10 tons. For international deliveries, it makes sense to use heavy 20-ton trucks. The corporate group’s team in Kiev organizes both FTL and groupage cargo shipments,” adds Nataliya Demchenko. “On the increasingly popular China-Europe route, transportation by express container trains and delivery by sea are in high demand. Railway transport is the fastest option, while sea transport is the most cost-efficient. To discuss whether sea freight is right for you, please get in touch with our office in Odessa.”
